thoughts, perhaps

 

What was I thinking 

When I said I love you?

A lifetime's load, perhaps,

Frailty too, 

Did I hope your needs would

Give way to my comforts?

What was I thinking

When I swore allegiance?

A safer better place, maybe,

Peer pressure too,

Did I hope you would not

Draft my kids for your wars?

What was I thinking 

When I wanted to achieve all?

Some flicker of luck, probably,

Dreams of grandeur too,

Did I hope my life would

Allow that which others get?
